James Bond and the Aston Martin V8: A Match Made in Movie Heaven

The Aston Martin V8 is a staple in the James Bond franchise, appearing in two iconic films: The Living Daylights (1987) and No Time To Die (2021). In both films, the V8 showcases its sleek design and high-tech gadgets, further solidifying its place as one of the most recognizable cars in the world.

The Living Daylights: Bond’s Convertible and Winterized V8

In The Living Daylights, James Bond (played by Timothy Dalton) drives two Aston Martins, both of which are supposed to be the same car. At the beginning of the film, Bond drives a V8 Volante (convertible) manual with some Vantage upgrades. The actual car used in these scenes was a pre-production Volante owned by Aston Martin Lagonda’s chairman, Victor Gauntlett. Later in the film, the car is supposedly fitted with a hardtop “winterized” by Q-Branch. However, these scenes feature a pair of non-Vantage Series IV V8 saloons, retrofitted with the same license plate and Vantage badges as the car in the beginning.

No Time To Die: Bond’s Latest Aston Martin Adventure

In No Time To Die, James Bond (played by Daniel Craig) retrieves his Aston Martin V8 from a garage storage and drives it in London and Norway. Three cars were used in the film, created from one V8 Saloon Series III automatic, one V8 Series IV automatic, and one V8 Vantage Series II manual. A 1981 Aston Martin V8, one of three specifically modified for No Time To Die, will be auctioned by Christie’s during the 60 Years of Bond live auction. This V8 was exclusively modified for the film and was driven by Daniel Craig on location in Norway, Italy, London, Scotland, and Windsor.
